The renegade Maltusian Krona flooded the beginning of time with entropy. His experiment also created the antimatter universe of Qward.[1][2]

To atone for Krona's crime, his immortal colleagues relocated to the planet Oa and became the Guardians of the Universe. Dedicated to science, the Guardians experimented with various races, including the Psions.[3]

Killalla of the Glow, a young Oan, briefly became the lover of Dream and met his family. When she left him, he blamed his sibling, Desire.[4]

Over the following millennia, the Guardians gathered the cosmos' mystic energy into the Starheart, creating the Central Power Battery. With the Battery they collected and stored pure "willpower" from throughout the universe (green on the "emotional spectrum"), and used it to contain a fear parasite (yellow-hued) called Parallax, thus embedding an impurity in the green energy.[5]
