Warfare and barbarian attacks devastated the Hyborian world. Changing climate conditions forced Nordic tribes southward, where they clashed with barbarian tribes which had invaded from the east. After decades of conflict, the western world was thrown into chaos, until finally not one civilized kingdom existed. The western world became dominated by Nordic barbarians.[1]

A Second Great Cataclysm rocked the Earth. Sea levels rose until vast areas of the western world sank beneath the waves. The Endo-Hither continent was torn in two when the Belegaer flooded into the area that would become known as the Mediterranean Sea. The lands from Stygia southward broke from the north, forming the continent of the Hither Lands. The mountains of Cimmeria remained above sea level, and would eventually become known as the British Isles. The inland Villayet Sea shrank greatly in size, and would become known as the Caspian Sea. The remains of the continent of Atlantis sunk beneath the ocean during the cataclysm. Only scattered cities survived underwater: notably Poseidonis, ruled by King Orin, and Tritonis, where his brother, the priest Shalako, led a contingent of followers. A serum allowed the survivors to breath underwater, and the Tritonians were mystically converted to tailed merpeople.[2][3][4][5]

After the great catastrophe, the son of Hadon of Opar emigrated to the south and founded the city of Kôr. He carried with him a huge axe made of meteorite iron, which would eventually be passed down to Umslopogass, the great Zulu hero, who would shatter it in the city of Zu-Vendis.[6][7]

The peoples around the Caspian Sea eventually experienced prosperity, resulting in a population boom. These peoples, descendants of Nordic and Cimmerian tribes, became known as the Aryans. Their growing population forced an outward migration, and many Aryans left their homelands to settle in lands that would become known as India, Asia Minor, and Endor.[8]
